About Sudama Mandir
Sudama Mandir — The Friendship Temple
Sudama Mandir is one of Porbandar's most revered religious sites — an ancient temple dedicated to Sudama, the legendary childhood friend of Lord Krishna. The story of Sudama and Krishna is one of Hindu mythology's most beloved tales of friendship transcending all social boundaries, and this temple stands as a permanent testament to that bond.
According to tradition, Porbandar is the birthplace of Sudama — making this city doubly significant in Indian spiritual and historical heritage. Born into a poor Brahmin family, Sudama's friendship with the divine Krishna, their separation, reunion and Krishna's act of transforming Sudama's poverty into abundance forms one of the most moving episodes in the Bhagavata Purana.
The temple complex is beautiful — white marble construction, intricate carvings, and an atmosphere of deep devotion. It is especially busy during morning and evening aarti sessions, when the sound of bells and the fragrance of incense fill the entire old city. The temple is 0.8 km from Kirti Mandir and the two sites together form the core of any Porbandar heritage visit.
The Story
The Legend of Sudama & Krishna
As young boys in the ashram of Guru Sandipani, Sudama and Krishna became the closest of friends despite coming from vastly different backgrounds — Sudama from a poor Brahmin family, Krishna destined to be a prince. They studied together, worked together, and formed a friendship as pure as any in scripture.
Years later, Sudama — now impoverished, with a large family to feed — was persuaded by his wife to visit his childhood friend Krishna, who had by then become the King of Dwarka. Sudama was ashamed to arrive empty-handed before a king, so he carried only a small bundle of poha (flattened rice) — the simplest of gifts.
When Krishna saw his old friend approaching, he ran forward and embraced him. When he discovered the humble bundle of poha, he ate it with such delight that the entire universe was said to have trembled. Sudama was too embarrassed to ask for anything. But when he returned home, he found his broken hut transformed into a palace — Krishna had given him everything without being asked. The story is a meditation on the nature of true friendship, devotion, and divine grace.
"The friendship of Sudama and Krishna teaches us that true love and friendship need nothing to sustain them — neither gifts, nor time, nor distance."
— From the Bhagavata Purana

Visitor Tips
Tips for Visiting Sudama Mandir
Attend the 6:30 AM aarti — it is the best time to visit, with fewer crowds and the most devotional atmosphere. Worth waking up early for.
Do not wear leather items inside the temple sanctum. Leave belts and bags at the shoe rack near the entrance.
Combine with Kirti Mandir — the two sites together form Porbandar's essential heritage walk. Do both in a single morning (3–4 hours total).
Do not photograph the deity (main idol). Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard and architecture but not of the sacred icon itself.
Read the carved panels on the temple exterior — they depict the full Sudama-Krishna story. A guide or signage helps interpret them.
Avoid peak festival days if you want a peaceful visit — Janmashtami and major Hindu festivals bring enormous crowds. Come on a quiet weekday morning instead.
