Chowpaty Beach, Porbandar
Chowpaty Beach is Porbandar's most cherished public space — a long, gently curving stretch of the Arabian Sea coastline on the western edge of the city. Unlike many crowded beaches elsewhere, Chowpaty Porbandar retains an authentic, unhurried quality that makes it a favourite with locals and a memorable discovery for tourists.
The beach is at its most magical during the golden hour before sunset, when the fishing harbour to the south comes alive with returning boats, the sky turns amber and rose, and hundreds of locals gather for their evening walk. The Porbandar Fish Port — one of Gujarat's largest — sits just 1.2 km south, making the sight of traditional fishing vessels on the horizon a constant and atmospheric backdrop.
Street food vendors, coconut water stalls and local tea shops line the promenade from mid-afternoon. Children's rides, balloon sellers and bhajia stalls appear in the evenings, giving the beach a festival-like atmosphere on weekends and holidays.

Watch the Sunset
Chowpaty's west-facing shoreline offers some of the best unobstructed Arabian Sea sunsets in all of Gujarat. Arrive by 5:30 PM, find a spot on the promenade, and watch the sky transform from blue to gold to deep crimson as fishing boats return to the harbour. October to February sunsets are especially spectacular with clear skies.

Evening Walk on the Promenade
The 1.2 km paved promenade along the seafront is one of Porbandar's most pleasant walks. Wide, lit, and lined with benches, it fills with locals every evening from 4 PM. The sea breeze, the sound of waves, and the gradual evening activity make it one of the most authentic local experiences in the city.

Street Food Trail
The beachfront food stalls are as much an attraction as the beach itself. Start with fresh coconut water (₹20), move on to roasted corn (₹15), try the local sev khamani (₹30), and end with a cup of cutting chai (₹10). The bhajia stalls near the central promenade are legendary among Porbandar locals.

Photography — Sunrise & Sunset
Chowpaty is a photographer's delight — from fishing boats at dawn (5:30–7 AM) to the glowing harbour silhouettes at dusk. The beach offers dramatic compositions: weathered boats on golden sand, local fishermen mending nets, children playing in the surf, and the wide open horizon. No permits required.

Swimming & Paddling (Seasonal)
The sea at Chowpaty is calm and relatively shallow near the shore during the winter months. Swimming is safe October to March with lifeguards present. The water clarity is good. Children paddle freely in the surf zone. Avoid monsoon months entirely — currents are strong and lifeguards are not posted.

Horse & Camel Rides
A local tradition — horse owners bring their animals to the beach every evening for rides along the waterline. Children especially enjoy this. Camels occasionally appear on weekends and holidays. Rates are negotiable — ₹50–₹100 for a short beach ride. Always check the animal's condition before booking.

Tips Before You Go
Arrive by 5 PM for the sunset — the best spots on the promenade fill up by 5:30 PM on weekends and in peak season.
Do not swim during monsoon (June–September). Currents are strong and no lifeguards are present. Red flags mean no entry.
Carry cash — all street food stalls, boat rides and horse rides are cash only. ATMs are available 1 km away on M.G. Road.
Do not litter — Porbandar NAMC has actively maintained the beach. Use the bins provided. Help keep it clean for everyone.
Wear comfortable footwear you can remove easily. The paved promenade is fine for sandals but beach sand requires bare feet or flip-flops.
Avoid evenings alone in the far ends of the beach after 10 PM — lighting is limited. Stick to the central promenade area which is well lit.
Visit the fish port at 6 AM the morning after a beach evening — it's 1.2 km walk and completely transforms your experience of Porbandar's coastal life.
Try the kaava — hot lemon kaava (kaahva) from the roaming beach vendors is a Chowpaty must. Sip a cup as the sun sets; it is the local way to end a beach evening.
